FAQs

How do I apply for a mooring license in Sydney?

To apply for a private mooring licence in Sydney, visit the Service NSW website . You'll need to select a mooring area using the interactive map, provide necessary documentation such as proof of identity and vessel registration, and pay the applicable fees.

If your application is approved, a Boating Safety Officer will assign a mooring location, and you'll be responsible for hiring a licensed contractor to install the mooring apparatus. The mooring buoy must be yellow and clearly display your licence number. Licences are valid for 12 months and must be renewed annually.

For more detailed information, you can refer to the official Service NSW page on private mooring licences.

How often should I service my mooring?

Per NSW Maritime mooring licence requirements, you should service your mooring at least once every 12 months to ensure it's safe and compliant. In exposed areas or high-traffic zones, more frequent checks may be needed. Annual servicing is often required for licence renewals.

It is critical that moorings are serviced annually to ensure that your vessel insurance is not voiod.

For more information, visit the Service NSW Private Mooring Licence page or the Service NSW Renew a Private Mooring Licence page.

·      Cleaning and removal of marine growth

·      Checking for wear, corrosion, and damage

·      Replacement of worn or damaged parts (if needed)

·      Verification of correct positioning and depth

·      A service report or certificate for your records or licence renewal

·      Treharne Moorings can also provide photos or GPS location of the mooring location upon request

Can you inspect my mooring even if you didn’t install it?

Yes, we certainly can inspect and service moorings regardless of who installed them. Our experienced team is qualified to assess the condition of all types of mooring systems to ensure they are safe and compliant with regulations.

Do you send reminders for annual services?

Yes, we send out reminders two months before the due date to give customers plenty of time to schedule their service and provide any additional requests during the service work.

Can you replace or upgrade existing mooring equipment?

Yes, we offer replacement and upgrade services for existing mooring equipment to ensure your mooring remains safe, reliable, and up to date with the latest standards.

Do you provide a report or certificate after servicing?

Yes, after each mooring service, we provide a detailed report or certificate confirming the condition of your mooring and any work performed. This documentation is useful for your records and licence renewals.

What size or type of boats can you accommodate?

We provide new mooring installations and service motor vessels up to 55+ feet and sailing vessels up to 60+ feet. Please contact us if you have any questions about whether we could accommodate your vessel.

My mooring sunk, what should I do ?

Unfortunately, sometimes things go wrong! It is often that case that a mooring is run over by another boat and has cut the mooring line. If this unfortunate situation occurs, please contact us. We can help you arrange for a reputable diver to install a retrieval line on your mooring, so we can then repair your mooring apparatus and restore it to standard.

What should I do if I want a different mooring site?

If you wish to change your mooring site to another bay or within the same bay, you’ll need to apply for a new mooring licence for the desired location through Service NSW. Once Maritime issues you a new location, we will relocate your mooring to the new site. It’s best to coordinate the relocation with your annual mooring service if possible, as this can help save on additional costs.

If you wish to relocate your mooring within the same bay, you can apply for a relocation online through Service NSW.

I sold my boat, what should I do with my mooring ?

If you’ve sold your boat, you have a few options regarding your mooring:

(1)     you can transfer the mooring licence to the new owner,

(2)     surrender the licence back to Transport for NSW, or

(3)     keep the licence for a new vessel.

Be sure to notify Transport for NSW of any changes and update your mooring records accordingly.

If you no longer require the mooring, you can contact us for mooring relinquishment. We will remove all mooring apparatus to ensure a smooth process when you surrender your mooring lease.
